Keeping Up with Breezy

Is it 2015 already??? I can still remember the beginning of 2014 and even 2013 for that matter.

Anywho, we’re about 14 days deep into the new year. Have you all been keeping up with the goals that you’ve set out to accomplish so far? I have to be honest. I haven’t. Why? I simply didn’t make any goals for this year. My first reason is the new year sort of snuck up on me and I was in California for the last week of 2014 and the first few days of 2015. Secondly, my goal every year is just to do better than I did the year before. My definition of “doing better” ranges from finding more work for myself to delving into more interesting characters to finally making headway on side projects stuck on my to-do list.

But today, I’ll be meeting up with some fellow actors and we’re going to sit down and stuff our faces while planning out specific goals for this year. I can’t wait! I plan on being extremely specific this year and constantly reminding myself that small steps equal big steps. I still get easily discouraged at times when bigger goals haven’t been accomplished like I planned.

In the meantime, one thing that I MUST do is keep anyone who wants to know up-to-date on when and where they can catch me in various acting projects. I am absolutely horrible at doing so. I was thinking of creating a newsletter but I feel like my jobs are so sporadic that the newsletter wouldn’t be regular at all. And let’s face it, my life is not that exciting to just send out newsletters chronicling what I do every week or even every day.

In case you’re wondering, lately a typical weekday consists of:

  • 6:15 – 6:29 am – Force myself out of bed to conquer the day beginning with my job that I have to get to by 7 am.
  • 7 am – By the grace of God, make it to work on time although I live 20 minutes away from job.
  • 11:30 am – Decide between sleeping or eating…or yoga for lunch.
  • 2 pm – Friendly reminder: DON’T CRASH, BREEZY! You didn’t remember to buy an Amp to drink today.
  • 3:25 pm – Agonizingly wait for the clock to turn to 3:30 pm so I can leave and go home to do…mostly nothing with a few brainstorming sessions mixed in there.

Yea. Very exhilarating….

Nevertheless, I’ve got a few exciting things coming up and I need to get the word out! I still share things on my Facebook and my Twitter. But those are mostly general blasts to whomever happens to see them. I’ve been finding out after the fact that I’ve missed a lot of people who actually want to know what I’ve been up to in the acting world. 😦 Enter MailChimp. 🙂

I’ve set up an account and I’m ready for any and everyone who wishes to SUBSCRIBE to receive an email and/or text from me. 🙂 My newsletter will get straight to the point with what the project is about, who I get to portray, when it’s available to view, where you can catch it, and how much it will cost to attend (if anything at all). I’ll even throw in my favorite quote of the day. So please, SUBSCRIBE and as soon as I know what I’ll be in, I’ll let you know!

P.S. You can also join the list by texting BREEZY to 33733 or filling out the form on my Facebook page.

The Things We Think We Remember

I probably spend too much time reminiscing about when life was simple and easier. But I had a pleasant trip down memory lane today when fellow blogger Ruth Ashley posted the following article on her Facebook. It’s been 25 years!

WATCH: 20th Anniversary of Jacksonville’s Freak Snow Storm

Here are a few pictures that are on the site:

It was Saturday, December 23rd of 1989. I was the ripe old age of 3. I remember being outside with my friends Bradley and Brent (I’ve always had mostly guy friends lol) eating icicles off of cars. Hindsight tells me that wasn’t the cleanest thing to do. But, hey, I guess that’s one of the perks of being young. I had not a care in the world not even for germs. So that’s all I knew about that date. I smiled and forwarded the article over to my mother. That’s when she told me even more about that day.

It turns out she and her friend Daisy were stuck down in Plant City. The snow came and coming north on I-95 wasn’t allowed. So my Granny came over to our place while my mom was out of town because she wanted me to feel comfortable while she was gone. My cousin Kuturah was possibly with her too. I asked her where my dad was at this time. She said she didn’t know but he wasn’t with us then (my parents divorced when I was 2 – and later remarried) but that’s why my Granny stayed with me. I didn’t remember any of that at all.

I couldn’t help but feel love and sadness after hearing the side of the story that I had known nothing about prior to today. You see my Granny died July of last year. I miss her every day. Of all of the memories I have of her, I’m a little sad that I can’t add more from December 23, 1989 because I was so young that I don’t remember. But I know that I loved having her around. I love my mother too. Sure you might think it’s no thing for a mother to make sure her baby is well taken care of while she’s out of town because that is what mothers are supposed to do. But I still feel grateful for her each and every day for the love she’s always shown me even if she wasn’t around and the sacrifices that she’s made for me over the years.

I’ll stop it here because I’m getting teary-eyed. But I’ll end my random post by saying:

Mom: Love you, Mommy! Thanks for adding to my memories of this day!

IMG_8077   IMG_8078

Bradley and Brent: if you ever happen to come across this article, I miss you guys! We had lots of fun back in the day.

Much thanks to Ruth and Jacksonville.com for the memories!

Until next time….

Taking Time to Be Grateful

Every morning, I wake up at about 6 a.m. I arrive at my office at about 7 a.m. I turn on my computer and proceed to enter my password. They make us change it ever so often but, for right now, my password is “be grateful”. Of course now I have to change it (either that or kill you all {insert evil laugh}) but I digress.

I made this password to always remind me to take out a minute each morning while I’m waiting for my computer to fully turn on and think about at least one thing that I am grateful for or to have. I am failing miserably.

BUT while telling a friend about an upcoming part  that I’ll have to play soon, I did stop to think about where I am currently in my acting career. It’s not exactly where I’d like it to be but hey this post is about being grateful, right?

The beginning of 2013, I was on fire! I was booking pretty well paid regional commercials left and right it seemed. I wasn’t taking any classes at the time. If I compare this year to the last one, it’s a little depressing. But then I realized something.

Although I haven’t been making the money like I was last year, I’ve been self-taping for “bigger” auditions. When I say bigger I mean definitely more substantial as in I’d be on everyone’s TV screen very soon if I had gotten the parts. I even had a chance to self-tape for a pilot during pilot season! I didn’t get the part but still that was a first for me so I still see it as a milestone that I’ve reached. In fact, I haven’t booked anything off of tape yet but that just gives me another opportunity for a new goal.

In addition to more chances for higher caliber work, I have had more opportunities to stretch my acting muscles to play a variety of characters. The best part isn’t necessarily the characters but the fact that the work I’ve gotten has been mostly from previous working relationships! That means a lot to me because it means that people want to work with me more than just once! I am so grateful to the dozens of people who have faith in me and my abilities to be able to convincingly play all of these different characters. I currently have three more coming up and two of those I’ve had to sign confidentiality agreements about. But I can’t wait to share them!

So all in all, I’ve had a pretty alright year. I’m grateful to still be able to do what I love. I’m grateful to have so many people believe in me and want to see me succeed in whatever endeavors I pursue. I’m grateful for an understanding supervisor who let’s me skip out in the middle of the day for auditions since I always make up my hours later. I’m grateful for a better working car that takes me to my auditions (and helps me earn more money with Lyft). I’m grateful just to be alive.

So tomorrow morning when I go into that office and type in my password, I’ve got one more chance to actually make it mean something.

I’m grateful for that too. 🙂

A New Chapter in My Life: Lyft

It has been a minute since I’ve stayed true to my blog’s headline by talking about acting and/or my life. Please accept my most sincerest apologies. Life has been so extremely fun and enjoyable lately that I’ve been forgetting to blog about it. I’ve also neglected my thinking journal a.k.a. diary but that’s a discussion for another day. So, in case anyone hasn’t been following my personal Facebook page, I’ve gotten lost in the world of Lyft (www.Lyft.com).

What is Lyft?

2014-05-29 22.36.57

It is a ridesharing app that has sometimes been compared to Uber (Sidecar also) that is quickly sweeping the nation. It officially launched here in Jacksonville, FL on April 24th and I’ve been driving for them ever since. They are now located in 60 cities and continually growing. See if it’s in your city by going here. If it’s not there yet, be sure to request it!

2014-05-29 22.37.54

They are known for their friendly drivers and easily visible pink mustaches. Their motto is “Your friend with a car” and that is exactly what I have been to the past 96 people (sometimes couples) that I’ve had the pleasure of giving a ride too.

So the concept is pretty simple.  If you need a ride anywhere, just download the app and request a Lyft.

2014-05-29 22.37.23

For being a new customer, your first 50 rides (up to $25 each) are free for two weeks! Please visit www.lyft.com/invited/breezy33 to get started! That’s my personal link and it’ll give you an extra free ride. Plus, it’ll make me really happy if you use it of course. 🙂

2014-05-29 19.37.52

What’s it like to be a Lyft passenger? It will be safe and a lot of fun! Lyft drivers are put through an extensive background check and are mentored by veteran drivers in the city to insure that they can follow traffic laws. You are also covered by a $1 million dollar insurance policy thanks to Lyft’s partner, MetLife.

If you go to Lyft online, you can sign up either using your Facebook account or your phone number. No money is exchanged between driver or passenger so when signing up, you will be prompted to enter a debit or credit card. When you request a lyft, it will contact the closest driver to you and send them a ping. They will have approximately 15 seconds to answer it. When they do, you will be able to see their name, their picture, and a picture of their car. It will also tell you how far away from you they are. If needed, you will be able to call your driver through a secure line. Or your driver might call you to verify your location and that you actually need a ride. While your driver is on their way to you, you will be able to see the route that they are taking. You will receive a text message once when they accept your request and second when they arrive at your location. Keep an eye out for the clean car with the pink mustache! Then it’s time to start the Lyft with a fist bump and you’re off!

At the end of your ride, it’s time to pay and rate your driver. Even though the first 50 rides (must be used within two weeks) are free, it will still show up in the app as if you are paying. Believe me when I say that you aren’t paying and you will see that later in your email when you get your receipt. But if your ride does goes over the $25 off promotion, then you will be charged the difference. You also get the chance to tip your driver by using the plus or minus signs when it comes time to pay. You can rate your driver on a scale from 1 to 5 stars. If you decide to rate them as anything less than 5, you can flag them for cleanliness, friendliness, navigation, and safety. There is also a section where you are encouraged to write a little bit about your experience and how you liked or didn’t like your driver. As a driver, we will get the pleasure of reading your comments when we receive our weekly summaries 🙂 so please, please let us know how we did!

Oh and after your ride is over, the number that was used to help you and your driver connect will no longer work. It’s just a little extra safety feature that Lyft added to protect both driver and passenger from unwanted calls later. If you and your driver decide to exchange personal numbers, well then that’s of course totally up to you both.

What’s it like to be a driver? It’s just as safe and fun as being a passenger! I believe that you have to be 23 years of age (I think in some places they’ve already converted over to a minimum age of 21) and own a 2000 or newer 4-door car. You will sign up for Lyft just as a passenger does. So you will also be able to have 50 free rides for the first two weeks. You will have to fill out some online paperwork and submit personal information about yourself for a background check. After everything has been cleared through headquarters, they will let you know when and how to request a mentor as your last and final step to becoming a driver.

Your mentor (if you live in Jacksonville, you could get me!) will double check your license, registration, insurance card, and license plate. They will do a thorough inspection of your car to make sure that it is a safe vehicle and will be comfortable for passengers. Then they will have you drive them around the block just to be certain of your ability to obey traffic laws. After that’s all over, you just have to wait to hear from headquarters again before you are given the big thumbs up to start picking up passengers. Oh and they make sure that you wait on them before you can drive because your app will not work properly until everything has been completed.

As a mentor, I highly recommend to all of my drivers that they request a Lyft at some point preferably before or in the beginning stages of driving for Lyft. This way they can see just how it is to be a passenger if they don’t know already.

Picking up a passenger for the first time can be a nerve-wrecking moment for some. I know that I was a little nervous because I had no idea who I was going to meet exactly. I saw their picture of course but that still didn’t tell me who they were.

So when you receive a “ping”, as I like to call it, you have about 15 seconds to accept it. You will see the passenger’s Facebook picture. If they’ve signed up with a phone number, there might not be any picture at all. You can call the passenger with the number provided to double-check their address since GPS isn’t always the most reliable thing. I like to call any passenger who is 15 minutes or more away from me just to make sure that they know that they are requesting right at that moment. I’ve had people try to request lyfts for days in advance and I saved myself some gas by calling ahead to verify. You can then select the navigation arrow right in the app and it will take you to your preferred GPS app. You can change this setting under your profile. I prefer to use Waze because it always keeps me up-to-date on changes in traffic or routes.

When you arrive at your passenger’s location and they get in your car, slide to start the Lyft. Greet them with a fist bump and ask where they are going. There is a feature that allows the passenger to put in their destination when they request you but not everyone does that. It also might be helpful to ask the passenger if they have a preferred route they’d like to take versus the route that your GPS might suggest. When you arrive at their destination, slide to stop the Lyft. And that’s it!

If you’d like to be a driver for Lyft, be sure to visit my link: http://lft.to/1hRCK3r or use your QR code reader for this picture:

The Lyft experience is truly a unique one. There are sooo many creative Lyfts out there from the BatLyft to the DiscoLyft to the HelloKittyLyft to the MagneticPoetryLyft to the ChalkboardLyft to the GhostbustersLyft to the CookieWarsLyft. The possibilities are endless. So that’s where creativity from you as the driver comes in to play. You can offer whatever unique experience that you would like to your passengers. I’m working on something myself 🙂 but I’ll write another blog post when I do. Hint: it will consist of maximum relaxation and I’m too excited to get started on it!

Now here’s one part about Lyft that I get REALLY excited about: the potential earnings. You earn money by driving, mentoring, and different bonuses. Without getting too personal and being too specific, let’s just say that I’ve been driving for Lyft for a little over a month now PART-TIME and I’ve made approximately $1500 gross. O_O Sure I’m an independent contractor so I have to take out my own taxes. But for a part-time job, you can’t deny that that isn’t a bad amount of money to make. Also, I’ve been taking the lazy route. By that I mean, I mostly stay at or near my home until I get a request. Some drivers go to where the most people who would use our service would be located. I haven’t quite done that yet. I also haven’t taken the after club shift yet either.

I set my own hours and they can be just as random as I like. This works perfectly for me because my schedule is never exactly the same from week to week or even day to day! Plus they’ve added this feature that lets you know approximately how much you can make per hour time slot. That has been very motivating when it comes to deciding which hours to work.

Every morning at about 8:30 am, I get a daily summary telling me the miles I drove, the amount of time I drove, the amount of time I was in driver mode, and the amount of money that I made from the day before. Every Tuesday morning, I receive a weekly summary that spans from the past Monday to Sunday (i.e. my last weekly summary was for May 19-25). You receive a direct deposit into your bank account anytime between Wednesday and Friday. I’m not sure if it’s because I bank with Bank of America or not, but I receive my direct deposit on Wednesday mornings.

I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting soooo many different people. My fellow actors out there can no doubt appreciate the benefit and joy of meeting people from all different walks of life. I’ve learned so much for future characters that I can portray and I’ve also made some great friends along the way. I’ve met people in all different job fields (I once learned all about energy trading on the way to the airport). I’ve met a very strong and inspirational breast cancer survivor. I’ve met young ladies from Colombia, Argentina, and Venezuela who came here just to go to UNF. I once picked up a guy from his house and dropped him off at work then discovered that my next passenger was his girlfriend that I picked up from work and took back to their house. I picked up a lady one night from work to take her home only to pick her roommate up from work the very next night to take him home as well!

It has been such a small world since I’ve been driving for Lyft. I wouldn’t have it any other way. 🙂

So, please don’t forget to sign up and start your Lyft experience today by using my link: www.lyft.com/invited/breezy33 (or http://lft.to/1hRCK3r if you’re ready to drive)! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment and ask.

See you out there!

Raising the Barre in Song

Life has been pretty good to me lately and since my last post. I’ve even taken up a couple of extracurricular activities. 🙂

Activity number one is taking barre classes at Pure Barre at Tapestry Park in Jacksonville, Florida. Truth be told, I knew about the company Pure Barre about two years or so ago. I don’t remember how I came across them but I know that any new, exciting way to exercise always catches my attention. I remember even sending them an email asking them when they were going to come here. I’ll look through my old emails at work tomorrow to pinpoint when I sent it. Anyway, they FINALLY came. And what did I do? Nothing. In fact, they’ve been here in Jacksonville (well, Jacksonville Beach at first) since sometime in 2012. Talk about dropping the ball. But better late than never lol and I attended my first class at the Riverside location in December of 2013. It was hard but a nice change of pace for me. Then I noticed that they had a location at Tapestry Park. So I signed up for unlimited classes and have been attending about 4 times a week at least. (Sidenote: prices slightly vary based on location but if you’re a new client, you can take unlimited classes for a month at Tapestry Park for only $95!) Riverside is close to my day job but Tapestry Park is closer to my house. Trust me though that after 55 minutes of working out in this environment you definitely want to be closer to home to take a shower ASAP.

So, what is pure barre? It’s a class that exercises all of your body but has a concentration on women’s trouble spots i.e. hips, butt, thighs, and abs. There is a ballet barre but you don’t only learn a ballerina’s moves. We warm up, sculpt arms, tone thighs, lift seat, flatten abs and cool down in that order. The most amazing thing that I’ve learned so far is how much a difference can be made with just tiny, specific movements. For instance, this past Saturday I took a Breaking Down the Barre workshop. This free class is only to be taken after you’ve completed a few classes so that you already know what’s going on. It was the best thing that I’ve done so far. I learned correct posture for all of the moves that we do. Always engaging your core and tucking in your hips (having a heavy tailbone) not only adds to your workout results but it actually makes some of the moves easier to execute.

The women of Pure Barre are sooooo friendly also. I absolutely adore Rachel Robertson, owner of the Tapestry Park location, and all of her staff. So far, I’ve had the pleasure of learning from Rachel, Mary Beth, and Tiney. I haven’t had a class by Jessella yet but she’s awesome too and I met her at the workshop. These ladies go above and beyond to make sure that you are getting the most bang for your buck. They encourage you and readjust you every step of the way. They tell you to find that point where your muscles shake and/or burn and keep going. Also, their genuine interest really shows and that’s so hard to find these days. If they see this post, thank you ladies and see you soon!

So, that’s it about my pure barre. Activity number two was a voice lesson! It was my first one and I was beyond nervous because I had no idea what to expect. I can mimic pretty well and I can harmonize but I’m not sure that I can entirely sing. So, I wanted to put it to the test and possibly improve if there was anything to improve on. I was referred to the awesome Cheryl Kaleda by fellow actress/improv performer extraordinaire/voiceover genius Courtney Gardner.

We started off by doing some scales. I think that’s the correct terminology. I honestly don’t know yet. But basically, she played on her keyboard and sang while I tried to match. Since it was my first lesson, she suggested that I take the hour lesson instead of the 30 minute and I’m so glad I did. She gave me a preliminary crash course on techniques so that I would know exactly what I was getting myself into. It is going to be a lot of work but I’m up for the challenge. I’ve got to work on my breath support, openness, and forwardness. I learned several exercises to help me with each. I am happy to say that based on what we went over this past Saturday, she believes that for now it might be easier to sing in alto but someday, with training, I could be a soprano!

The part that I’ve had the most difficulty with so far is my chest/belting voice. I’ve got my head voice down kind of well and my middle voice (she calls it the Disney voice/reading to young children voice lol) is pretty good. So I’ve really got to concentrate on my forwardness and openness. My homework has been to work on the things I mentioned before and also find two songs that really speak to me. One has to be a song that uses head voice and one has to be one that uses chest voice. I’m open to suggestions!

Speaking of homework, I should probably get to it. I haven’t completed any exercises yet today.

Until next time! 🙂

Update: I sent an email asking to be on the mailing list June 2012.

Plateau Surfing

During the year of 2013, I was fortunate (I guess) to be bombarded with tons of different ideas. I had short film scripts, novels, short stories, comic strips, products, and services all there in my head. So I wrote them all down for starters. For this year, I’ve decided that I’d like to capitalize on some of those ideas. Hopefully I can develop a few into a thriving side business.

How am I doing so far? If I base it on level of productivity, I’d say eh alright. If I base it on having a full product/service ready to go, I’d say horribly. So I’ll try to find some middle ground and say that I’m doing considerably well for the time that I’ve dedicated to it BUT it could always be better.

All in all, it feels like I’m stuck on a huge plateau and I’m just moving from side to side on a number of different projects. So this means that I should just choose one and see it through until the end. I mean that sounds logical to me. I try to work that way for awhile. Then my brain chimes in with ideas again for ANY other project than the one that I’m working on currently. *sigh* I’ll get it together one day. I am glad that I have ideas to work from when before I used to just wish that an idea would pop into my head.

At times, I feel like my main job is on a plateau as well. I do the same job every day with no real change (except for my new office that I’ll be moving into in a couple of weeks). But I know that I’m very fortunate to have a stable job with a steady paycheck AND the ability to pursue my acting career at the same time.

My acting career is sort of on a plateau as well, especially if I compare it to 2013. I hit the ground running around this time last year with back-to-back bookings for commercials with significant paychecks. I’m still hoping that this year will be 10 times better since I feel better about my craft. Plus I have already worked on a few projects this year that I can’t wait to see and tell others about. When I stop and think about it all, I’m really proud of myself and how far I’ve come.

So just maybe this plateau surfing isn’t so bad after all. It is only temporary.

Improvements. Improvements.

It’s the first weekend of a new year! 🙂

Toward the end of last year, I severely cut back on the number of posts that I was making. I started this blog as a suggestion for my acting career. Then, I had to decide what content I wanted to post. So I started blogging about articles and anything else that I could find to help other actors.

It’s not that I don’t genuinely love helping others anymore but I find that my heart isn’t in blogging. So I need to find a new interest to keep me going. I came across an article titled Zero to Hero: 30 Days to a Better Blog. I am a HUGE fan of lists and tasks that lead to self-improvement. So, trying out their suggestions is naturally the choice to make. Plus, it still sticks with part of the theme of my blog which is the journey of my life.

Although, it’s the 5th of January, today will be my day one. What is day one’s assignment? Introduce yourself.

So, who is Breezy Sharp? Well, she is a 27 year old slight perfectionist who thinks that discovering herself and everything she is about is the highlight of her life so far. In the past year she has been learning how to reel in the controlling side of her personality despite being a free-spirit at the same time. She has learned the reasons why she never sticks with any one thing for a significant amount of time (yes lack of discipline is included) and why she switches between loving people and hating people constantly (seriously sometimes animals are so much easier). She has been known to be silly in times of seriousness and loving and caring in times of need. She sometimes has internal nervous breakdowns where she wonders how she got this far in life without starting a successful business of her own and feels like a failure because she hasn’t yet. She is horrible about saving. She loves how her smile and aura can immediately uplift someone else’s day. She often forgets the little steps she made toward bigger goals and gets easily frustrated by seeing the big picture and realizing that she’s not there yet. Finally, she is okay now with the fact that her brain moves 200 miles a minute jumping from subject to subject and the fact that no one else ever seems to completely understand her.

Why should you read her blog? To be absolutely honest, I don’t know. I wish that I had a concrete answer but I don’t. I know what I enjoyed blogging about before. I know that I wanted to switch things up. But I haven’t yet. So, I’m going to follow the suggestions in the blog I mentioned above and see where the month takes me. It’s still a journey with me through life and acting. I hope that at some point in time it will pick up enough momentum to be interesting.

I try to have full faith in just taking the first step. Feel free to join me in trying out Zero to Hero: 30 Days to a Better Blog. Let’s see where this year leads us!

Marriage Isn’t For You

Definitely touched a nerve! It’s a must read!

Seth Adam Smith

Having been married only a year and a half, I’ve recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn’t for me.

Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading.

I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for ten years until…until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. 🙂 I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all.

Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy?

Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad.

Perhaps each…
